InTech Mission / Goals

Our Mission

The Instructional Technology Department at McDaniel College is devoted to: (a) providing training, support, and guidance to faculty, students, and staff in the use of current and emerging learning technologies; (b) providing greater access to learning and markets through the design, development, and support of online classes and communities; (c) integrating technologies and pedagogies that enhance collaborative and student-centered learning; and (d) collaborating with IT to support the increasing use of technology to produce more efficient and transparent administrative processes throughout the campus community. To accomplish these things, members of the Department of Instructional Technology will: (e) continue our own education and training, increasing our knowledge and skills in instructional theory, multimedia, and emerging technologies, and (f) continue to evaluate our individual efforts and our department’s effectiveness on a regular basis.

GOALS and PRIORITIES 2009 – 2010


GOAL ONE
Work with Graduate and Professional Studies and the Center for Leadership in Global Enterprise to develop and implement a process of online course development and management that will produce an efficient,  scalable, and sustainable system that will increase the quality of our online courses,  improve support for our online faculty, expand our reach in existing and new markets, and provide a model that will inform similar course development and management processes for undergraduate and/or continuing education initiatives in the future.

  • Work with Graduate Steering Committee to establish process and timeline for course development.
  • Work with Graduate Department to establish faculty training policies for online instruction.
  • Work with faculty to put at least 20 new courses online and improve the design of at least 5 existing online courses.
  • Work with LGE to put complete program online.

3.6.13. Continue to maintain and build partnerships with school systems, business, not-for-profit organizations, professional groups and state and local agencies to provide enhanced graduate offerings to meet their needs.

4.3.8.   Develop strategies to keep a McDaniel education accessible in light of changing demographics and challenging economic times.

1.2.4.   Develop more opportunities for undergraduates to enroll in graduate courses, and use the resources of the graduate program to enhance the undergraduate program.

GOAL TWO
Build new student learning communities and improve instructional technology training and support for students.
  • Improve training for SWATT and consider ways of effectively expanding its mission
  • Work with Graduate Marketing to create social networking site that will provide a “My First Year” type community/information portal for graduate students.

2.1.3. Identify pedagogies and new technologies that promote collaborative student learning in the classroom and find ways to support the out-of-classroom collaborations necessary for student learning and in-class projects.

1.2.4.   Develop more opportunities for undergraduates to enroll in graduate courses, and use the resources of the graduate program to enhance the undergraduate program.

GOAL 3
Build new learning communities and improve instructional technology training and support for faculty.
  • Improve and add to our workshop series, with special emphasis on ways of supporting student-centered learning and increasing student collaboration.
  • Create Online Tutorials.
  • Implement Atomic Learning series and provide opportunities for synchronous online training.
  • Work with GPS to create a social networking site directed primarily at adjunct faculty, providing training and resources, as well as information, communication and opportunities for new learning communities.
  • Have plan in place for using Blackboard to continue classes in the event of campus shut down due to pandemic or other crisis.

GOAL 4
Promote and support technologies that promote and  support (a) collaboration, (b) student –centered learning, (c) new ways of teaching, learning, and assessment, and  (d) new ways of collaborating with learning communities on the Westminster campus and  beyond the Westminster campus. 
  • Promote, support, and train faculty on the use of Wimba for synchronous online meetings.
  • Promote, support, and train faculty and students on the use of iTunesU for alternative means of distributing course content and displaying student work.
  • Continue to provide options and strategies for the use of digital portfolios.
  • Promote, support, and train faculty and students on the use of Second Life as a means to collaborate with new learning communities, display student projects, have additional options for synchronous meetings.
  • Promote, support, and train faculty and students on the use of Blogs and Wikis as a means for multiple constituencies to collaborate and communicate with one another.

4.3.8.  Develop strategies to keep a McDaniel education accessible in light of changing demographics and challenging economic times.

2.1.3. Identify pedagogies and new technologies that promote collaborative student learning in the classroom and find ways to support the out-of-classroom collaborations necessary for student learning and in-class projects.

1.3.4. Strengthen the McDaniel College Budapest program in both its academic and cultural dimensions and increase the number of students from Budapest who study at the Westminster campus.

GOAL 5
Continue to investigate, explore, and evaluate new learning technologies, make recommendations about their appropriate use on campus, and support their implementation and/or integration.
  • Keep up with instructional media literature and newsgroups.
  • Work with CFE to learn more about faculty members’ specific pedagogical objectives.
  • Communicate the connections between specific instructional technologies and student-centered learning objectives

Improve InTech’s communication with the McDaniel Community.
  • Work with CFE to increase our connections and conversations with faculty.
  • Each member of InTech will contribute regularly to an instructional technology blog.
  • Improve our www presence, our www2 presence, and our Intranet presence.
  • More effectively communicate SWATT and Maggie Lab resources to campus community.

GOAL 7
Improve training opportunities for staff.
  • Implement and support Atomic Learning program.

GOAL 8
Improve Blackboard-Colleague data integration processes
  • Continue to work with IT and the Registrar’s office to improve the data integration process between Blackboard and Colleague.

GOAL 9
Continue our own professional development
  • Anita will work on Instructional Technology degree, Chris will continue development in instructional systems, and Steve will present to at least one major conference.
  • Make attempts at publishing in peer-reviewed journals.

GOAL 10
Improve departmental and individual performance evaluations.
  • Continue surveying our constituents and provide more feedback opportunities to the campus community.
  • Consider new ways of measuring our effectiveness.
